Jaleswar Siva Temple

Overview

The Jalesvara Siva Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva. It is located on the southern outskirts of the village Kalarahanga.

About the temple

The curved gandi of the amazing vimana measuring 6.50 meters in elevation is categorized by a middle raha and a combination of kanika pagas and anuratha on either sides of raha. On the other hand, mastaka measuring 4.00 meters has a customary beki, khapuri, amlaka, and kalasa. However, gandi is devoid of a decoration. The bottom is ornamented with a sequence of small rekha deuls in the form of angasikharas on pagas positioned in sliding order from kanika paga to the raha as observed in Subarnesvara. It must be noted that gandi also does not have decoration. Jagamohana of the structure actually looks to be a recent construction like Parsuramesvara as the last and first grahas are hidden by the rear wall of jagamohana. On a particular height, jagamohana is a marvelous pidha deul integrating normal bada, mastaka and gandi measuring 7.40 meters from kalasa to khura.

Legend and Stories

Legend goes that the king of Chudangagada was a devotee of lord Lingaraja. He used to visit Lingaraja every day. Since it was not possible to commute to Lingaraja during the rainy seasons the lord advised him in a dream to construct a temple in the centre of a neighboring lotus pond where the lord himself dwells as a Jalasayi. The King complied with the desire of the lord by constructing the present temple, which is located on the western embankment of the Jalesvara pond.
