The Masik Shivarathri or Masa Shivarathri is observed on the Fourteenth day of the Krishna-paksha (waning) Chadurdasi of every Hindu lunar calendar. Krishna paksha is the Dark fortnight of the Lunar calendar, also known as waning.

Rituals of Masik Shivratri

The Shiva Linga is anointed with honey,Sandalwood  paste, yogurt (curd) and rosewater. As described in the Shiva Purana. The Kumkum, Vermillion is smeared on the Linga.

Devotees also dab Vibuthi (scared ash) on their forehead.

The Bilwa leave are Lord Shiva’s most famous offering, A bunch of which is offered during the Shivarathri and Prodosha days. People also offer betel leaves, Incense sticks and flowers to adorn the deity.

The Mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ is recited throughout the night. It is believed that the Mantra is capable of liberate people from all kinds of sins and impure thoughts.

 

6 Must Have Puja Materials

1.Bael (Aegle Marmelos) Leaves: Bilva leaves symbolise refinement of the soul.

2.Paan Patta (Betel Leaves): Betel leaves signify gratification with earthly pleasures.

3.Dhoop (Incense): Lighting incense sticks helps in accomplishment of wealth.

4.Rice & Fruits: Offering rice and fruits to the Lord guarantees longevity and achievement of wishes.

5.Sindoor (Vermilion): Applying sindoor on the linga after bathing represents purity.

6.Diya (Lamp): for the accomplishment of knowledge.

 

Masik Shivratri Vrat

Be it Masik Shivarathri or Maha Shivarthri, The ardent devotees of lord Shiva follow the same strict fast procedure. Devotees take bath with water boiled with til seeds as it removes bodily impurities.After which they visit the Shiva temple and perform the rituals. Arti is done, Bhajans are Sung and Incense sticks are lighted to invoke the Lord’s blessings. The Shiva Nama is chanted throughout the Period.

‘Om Namah Shivaya’

The fast continues for the day and night, It is broken only on the Morning with the consumption of the Prasad.

Significance of Masik Shivaratri Fast

The fast of Shivarathi days helps devotees control their senses and malevolent feelings of Jealousy, anger and Kama. Worship the Lord Whole-heartedly, singing praises to him and performing rituals every three hours obliterates all  the sins.

In Short it helps us attain Salvation and attain the grace of Lord Shiva.

Masik Shivratri and Women

Masik Shivratri is a vital day observed by women both married and spinsters. They observe fast on this day for better life of their husband and son. Unmarried girls fast for a better match and a loving better half.
