The district was once thick with Sugarcane fields. Two sages who went to this spot felt the vicinity of Lord Shiva in this spot. One contended that the holy tree of the spot be sugarcane while the other said that it ought to be Venni or the Nandhiavartham. Listening to their contentions, a voice from Lord Shiva said both could be the consecrated trees. From that point forward, Lord is revered as Karumbeswarar in Tamil and Rasapureeswarar in Sanskrit. The spot is named after the sacrosanct tree as Venniyur. Later, this changed as Koil Venni.

As per sacred writings, the temple's relic goes back to endless millenniums covering all the four yugas-Krutha, Thretha, Dwapara and Kali yugas. The Bana of the Shiva Linga shows up as though secured by sugarcane groups. This is the origination of noted Tamil Scholar Vennikuyathiar fitting in with the Sangam Age. One of her melodies in Purananooru notice the war of Karikal Chola known as Vennippor-war of Venni. He won the Pandya, Cheras and different chieftains with the endowments of Mother Pidari Amman at 18 years old. This is said as the Great Victory in an epigraphic note.
