Overview
This sivasthalam temple is located at Tiruvandarkovil, about 21 Kms to the east of Villupuram, on the Villupuram - Villianur - Puduchery national highway No.NH45A. Nearest town is Puduchery. The temple is praised in the hymns of saint Tirugnana Sambandar. This is the 16th Shiva Temple of Nadunadu region praised in Thevaram hymns.
About The Temple
Lord Vadukeeswara is a swayambu Linga slightly leaning on the left side. There are scars on the Linga. As a respect to the Lord, a turban is tied on the head. Mother Goddess is known as Vaduvagirkkanniammai.
Legend and Stories
Lord Brahma, the creator also had five heads as Lord Shiva. Once it so happened that Mother Goddess Parvathi mistook Lord Brahma as Lord Shiva which Brahma did not refute. The confusion arose because both had five heads. Thus, Lord Shiva removed one head of Brahama. Lord Brahma realising his mistake begged Lord Shiva’s pardon.This event took place here. As Lord Shiva removed one head of Brahma, He is named as Vadukeeswarar.

Thai Poosam in January-February , Shivrathri in February March,Wedding festival is celebrated on the Tamil New Year day falling almost on April 14 or a day before or after occasionally in some years, Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Skanda Sashti in October-November and Tirukarthikai in November-December are the major festivals celebrated in the temple.
