tilbhandeshwar temple

A plain brick structure, the temple of Tilbhandeshwar has a porch, an inner shrine and a spiral dome. The temple houses the largest linga in Nasik, about 2 ft tall and 5 ft round. It is believed that the linga grows every year, about the length of a till seed. Trimbakrav Vishvanath Pethe built this temple in 1763. A stone Nandi is present inside the temple. A group of temples dedicated to Devi, Vithoba, Narsimha and Vamana are situated close by and there are also tombs of several ascetics. A silver mask is placed on the palanquin and taken all around Nashik, on Mahashivaratra and every Monday in the month of Shravan. It is then bathed in a river, worshipped and brought back. The God is dressed as ardhanarishvara (half Mahadev and half Parvati) on the night of Vaikunta chathurdasi.
