Thiruvarasamoorthy Temple

Overview


Meiyathur, Thiruvarasamoorthy temple is located in Meiyathur, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India. The main God here is Thiruvarasamoorthy and Goddess is Sokkayi Amman. Though the main deity is Thiruvasaramoorthy, importance is given to the seven mothers (Shakthis). This temple is a Shiva temple.


About The Temple


There is a white horse as mount for Thiruvasaramoorthy and a red one for the Goddess. In addition, there is a big and a small elephant and also a lion. Near these, there are the protective gods like Nallan, Pethaan and Veranaar. They have snakes and maces in their hands. People who buy new cars and farmers who buy new harvesting tools submit them here for pooja.


Legend and Stories


According to legend, there was a huge battle between Lord Shiva and a demon named Anthakasur. There were demons appearing from the blood oozing out of Anthakasur’s wounds. Hence, Lord Shiva created two Shakthis named Yogeswari and Mageswari from the fire coming from his body. Together they defeated the demons. The seven Shakthis came to congratulate Lord Shiva over his victory and stayed here.

Significance


People pray here for a happy and wealthy life. They also ask the seven mothers to protect them from theft and bad deeds.

Meaning -According to this sloka, the entire world doesn't recognize the eternal God beyond them, because they are consumed by the elements of satva, rajas and tamas (good, obssessive and dark).

Daivi Hyesa Gunamayi Mama Maya Duratyaya Mameva Ye Prapadyante Mayametam Taranti Te

Meaning -According to this sloka, the heavenly maya of God is very complicated, but those who worship God will be able to overcome it.
