Talesvara Siva Temple

Overview

The Taleshwar Shiva temple is a Hindu temple in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. It is a living temple, meaning people use it for worshiping purposes. Its past use could not be ascertained as it was in ruins until renovation.

It is situated on the left side of the Kedar Gowri road leading from the Parasurameshwar temple to the Vaithal temple at a distance of 60 metres north-east of Parasurameshwar temple in Old Town, Bhubaneswar. It is 90 metres east of Kedar Gowri temple, 200 metres south of Ananta Vasudeva temple and 50 metres West of Uttareshwar temple. The temple is facing east. The presiding god is a Shiva lingam with a circular Yoni pitha inside the sanctum, which is 0.20 metres below the entrance doorway. The present shrine was entirely renovated in the recent past.

About The Temple

It is a rekha deul type of temple but now the superstructure does not exist. The temple is within a compound made of dressed laterite blocks. The compound wall measures 32 metres in length, 16.6 metres in breadth and 2 metres in height with an average thickness of 0.3 metres. While residential buildings surround the compound wall on the east and south, roads pass through in the west and north. There is an ancient well, made of laterite, in the south eastern corner of the temple, at a distance of 6 metres from the vimaana. The face of the well measures 2.6 square metres. Line drawings of various motifs on architectural members suggest that the temple was not complete.

Legend and Stories

The temple is owned by a private owner and it is presently looked after by Sri Sudarshana Panda and his family members, who live in Kedar Gowri Chowk, Old Town, Bhubaneswar. Because of the features like the graha architrave, that is carved with eight grahas. It is believed that it was established in the 8th century AD.
