Overview


Anbilalanturai Temple is located on the banks of River Kollidam in Anbil in Trichy district of Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity here in the form of Sri Satyavageeswarar or Alanthuraiar facing east with His consort Goddess Soundaryanayagi.


About The Temple


Anbilalanturai Temple is considered to be the 51st amongst the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams. Lord Shiva is praised in Tevaram hymns sung by Nayanmar Tirusambandar and Nayanmar Tirunavukkarasar. It is believed that Sevi Saitta Vinayagar (Lord Ganesha) leaned forward to hear these hymns. He was seen in a sitting posture. He bent one of His legs and bent his body forward to listen to the Thevaram with His ears wide open. The temple is said to be built by Parantaka Chola I during 9th century. The temple has 5-tiered rajagopura with two prakaras; the outer prakara comprises Nandanavan and the inner prakara has mandapas. There is a shrine of Lord Vishnu laid by God Surya and Chandra on both the sides.


About The Deity


Presiding deity Satyavakeeswarar is a swayambumurthy facing east.He is also praised as Brahmmapureeswarar as He was worshipped by Lord Brahmma.Mother Goddess Soundarya Nayaki is blessing the devotees.


Legend and Stories


According to the legend, Lord Bramha and Sage Vageesamuni worshipped Lord Shiva here; hence the Lord named as Bramhapureeswarar or Satyavageeswarar . When Tirusambandar was passing by this place, Lord Shiva to test His devotee caused heavy floods so that Tirusambandar couldn’t reach the temple and would get struck the other side of the River Kollidam. He started singing hymns of Lord Shiva from there itself. As the sound was not audible, Lord Vinayaka leaned His ear to hear the hymns and enjoyed them with a smile. A sculpture depicting this story is a masterpiece of temple architecture in the temple


Festival


Margazhi Tiruvadirai in December-January; Masi Maha Shivrathri in February-March and Panguni Uthiram in March-April are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
