The historical name for this ancient temple is Karkudi. Sage Mrukandu prayed to Shiva asking for a child. Shiva gave him two options-a fool with physical disability but with a long life span, or a wise and handsome child who would live only 16 years. The sage chose the latter and he was blessed with a son whom he named Markandeya. When Yama came to get him when he was 16, Markandeya ran to many Shiva Kshetras, finally came here and fell at the feet of Shiva. Shiva gave him asylum at Uyyakondon Hill and granted him eternal life "Chiranjeevi" at Tiruverkadu.
