Ramanatheeswarar Temple

Overview

The location of this ancient temple for Sri Ramanaadheswarar, connected with the period of Ramayana, is Porur and precisely very near Porur junction, inside off. Kunrathur Road.

About the Temple

The sanctum shape is the popular Chozha architecture type, Gajabrishta or Thoongaanai Maadam. It is surrounded by Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamurthy and other Koshta Murthies. The temple lacks Rajagopuram as well as Vimanam above the sanctum. This is probably the only Shiva temple, where Theertham and Sadaari are offered to the devotees as the practice of offering them are generally seen only in Vishnu temples.

About the Deity

Sri Ramanaadheswarar, the main deity, is seen in a very gigantic and beautifully decorated shape, is facing east and is a Swayambhu Lingam (self evolved). There is a separate shrine for Goddess Sivakaama Sundhari in the temple.

Legend and Stories

The temple is connected with the ancient period of Ramayana. According to history, Sri Rama rested here in this place, which was then a forest, on His way to Sri Lanka. While resting under an Amla tree (‘Nelli’ in Thamizh), He came to know that there was a Shiva Lingam under the ground and he had accidentally touched the head of the Shiva Lingam with his feet, due which he got a Dhosham.

To recover from the Dhosham and to bring out the Shiva Lingam, he undertook a penance for 48 days to please Lord Shiva with just one Amla fruit as his food. Pleased with Sri Rama’s penance, Lord Shiva came out from the earth and showed Sri Rama his Viswaroopa Dharshan.

Overwhelmed by Lord Shiva’s mercy, Sri Rama worshipped Him and named the Shiva Lingam as Sri Ramanaadheswarar. Goddess Parvathi too appeared as Sri Sivakaama Sundhari.
