Overview


Mallikeshwarar Temple is 700 years old. The temple is Located at the Lingi Street of Seethagathi Nagar. The temple is hardly 3 km from the Chennai Central Railway Station. Once, this temple was completely buried under the ground. The temple Kalasam just showed up during a digging. On further digging, the complete temple came into light. Now the temple is present two meters below the ground level. When the temple was discovered, fresh jasmine flowers were found on the Shiva lingam and so the deity is called Mallikeshwarar. The Goddess is considered to bless devotees with boons.

About The Temple


Sri Marahathambal Sametha Sri Mallikeswarar Temple

The temple Rajagopuram is very artistic. Once you enter, you can find a mandabam (hall) with pillars full of small sculptures. Following the mandabam, the Rajagopuram which is beautiful is located. After that, one can find a big tank along with a shrine for Lord Ganesh. There is a small shrine for Anandha Vinayagar before you enter the main shrine. One can find the idols of Lord Ganesh and Muruga in front of the entrance of the goddess’ shrine.

Around the main shrine, there is a small corridor which houses the idols of Vinayagar, Lingam, Dhakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga, and, Chandikeshwara. There are also small shrines of Viswanath with Vishalakshi, Mahadev, another Mahadev, Shanmugar, Shanmugar in Utsav (procession) form, Kailasanatha, Adhipuriswara, Saraswati, Naalwar and Natarajar along with Sivagami. There are also idols of Laxmi and Vishnu, Ganapathy, Muruga, Nagas, and 63 Nayanmars (Shaivaite gurus). All the Navagrihas are present with their respective vahanas (vehicles). Here, Aswametha and Neem tree are seen together as a single tree.


About The Deity


Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam called as Mallikeshwarar is the main deity of this temple. The beautiful idol of the main goddess of the temple Maragadambal is located in a separate shrine next to the shrine of Lord Mallikeshwarar.
