Overview


The Chirakkadavu Sree Mahadeva Temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated in the Kottayam district of the state Kerala, India. The Shiva Linga found in the temple is said to be a Swayambhu Linga.


About the temple


Chirakkadava Sri Mahadevar Temple is one of the oldest temples of India that was built more than 1000 years ago. The Shiva Linga present in this temple is a Swayambhu Linga that was found under the 'bilva Tree' (Aegle marmelos). The temple believed to have been built during the time of the 'Alwars'. There is a temple tank located near the temple from which provided the mud to build this temple. Devotees generally wash their feet in the running stream water before entering the temple premise. The temple pond is located to the east of this temple. Thus the place got to be called ‘Chirakadavu’ ('Chira' in Malayalam means Pond).


Legend and stories


According to legends, the king who constructed this temple is said to have built an 'ashram' near the vilva tree during his last days. He performed penance at this ashram and got to be known as the Kuwala (Bilwa) Maharshi. Lord Shiva is believed to have appeared in the rishi’s dreams and had suggested that he continue his sacred penance to enter the heavenly abode of the Lord. The devoted Rishi followed the Lord’s instructions and is said to have attained moksha.

The temple’s 'Balikallu' huge in size. A beautifully carved sculpture and a huge granite lamp is found in front of this Ballikall which attracts the visitors. Despite the huge 'Balikallu', visitors still get the glimpse of the Lord within the temple, when seen from the eastern entrance. A number of intricate wooden carvings are found all round the temple. The atmosphere around the temple is clean and peaceful, adding to the divinity of the place. 5 poojas, 3 Seeveli and daily 'Navakam' are performed in this temple.

The important festival celebrated is this temple is the much revered ‘Thiruulsavam’.
