Legend and Stories
The temple was constructed by Arjunan, one of the pandavas. During the Mahabharatha War, while Karna and Arjun were fighting, the former’s chariot wheels got stuck in the soil. Karna asked Arjuna not to attack him at that moment as he was trying to retrieve the wheels; however Arjuna killed karna while he was salvaging his chariot’s wheels from the soil. Arjuna, to relieve himself of the curse built a temple dedicated to perumal, thirukkuralappan.
The perumal is said to be the form of Vaamanar. Arjunan was able to site the seva of Sriman Narayanan as "Parthasarathy" during Mahabharatam and Vaamanar in this sthalam. Once, Brahma devan lost his Gnana book and to regain it, he conducted a great tapas over this sthala perumal. At that time, the perumal showed his seva and blessed him that he will regain the Gnana book. This is one of the historical stories said about this sthalam.
The Onam festival is celebrated in a magnificent way in this temple. One more special utsavam, Khandavadahanam is the practiced during the months of December and January. Dahanam means firing. As a remembrance of firing of Khandavana forest by Arjunan who was helped by Sri Krishnar, this utsavam is performed here.
Nammalwar - 10 Paasurams.
Since, the perumal gave his seva to Vedavyasa rishi, the pushkarani is said to be Vedavyasa saras and another theertham is Pambha theertham.
