Overview


The temple of Amodhavalli Thayar Samedha Sri Thirunarayana Perumal is situated at Kolathur about 5 kms west of Singa Perumal Koil. This is between Tambaram and Chengalpattu railway stations. The ancient name of the village Kolathur’s was ‘Sembian Kolathur’. The name ‘Sembian’ indicates Chola kings. This village is very renowned for its Sama Vedic scholars.


About The Temple


Sri Thirunarayan Perumal is located in scenic environs with a series of knolls forming the back drop and two big lakes one just at the back of the temple and another on the left of the Temple. Around 200 years back when Deephaprakasa Perumal of Kanchipuram graced this temple with his visit, Mangalasasanam was done by Shri Nigamandha Maha Desikan who was adorning this temple then. The temple is believed to be more than 400 years old.

By the year 1997, Vimanam was constructed for the sannadhi of Shri Thiru Narayana Perumal followed by Sam prokshanam of the same. The Dwajastambam which was very old was replaced by a new Dwajastambam and Maha Samprokshanam was done during 2002. Vimanam for Thayar sannadhi was built and maha samprokshnam was conducted during 2003. The sculptures at the temple is understood to be of the period of Vikrama Cholan.


About The Deity


The reigning deity is Thirunarayana Perumal with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhumi Devi. There is a separate sannidhi for the Goddess Amodhavalli Thayar. Amodhavalli thayar is the only thayar in this world with a distinctive name. Aamodham means joy, serenity and pleasure and she bestows happiness to all those who worship her. She also blesses the couples with child boon who come and pray to her for a child. It is widely acknowledged and also historically proved that this thayar's kungumam is enough for the couple to be blessed with a child. Kannan, Aandal, Ramar, Sampath Kumara, Chakrathu Aalwar, Nammazhvar and Ramanujar are minor deities.
