About the Temple

Thirupuleeshwarar and Vaikuntanathar Swami Temple is said to be built by Raja Simha Pallavan in 723 AD. However, some historians believe it was built prior to that. This is a twin temple of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu within the same compound. Lord Shiva here is called Thirupuleeshwarar or Vyakrapuleeshwarar and His consort Angayarkanni Ammai. In the sanctum, behind the Shiva Lingam, is the relief sculpture of Somaskanda. The Shiva temple section has Gaja Prushta Shivalayam architecture, meaning that the rear part of the sanctum is curved forming a semi circle. Lord Vishnu here is called Vaikunta Perumal and his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. There are separate shrines for Lord Muruga and Lord Vinayaga situated behind the Shiva and Vishnu shrines.
