Overview
This is one of the famous temples of Lord Krishna in Kerala which is 1500 years old. This temple is located in Tiruvarppu, on the shores of Meenachil River. (Varppu is the cast used to make bell metal vessels).
Legend and Stories
This temple is connected with Mahabharata period. When Pandavas lived in the forest, Lord Krishna gave his statue with four hands. When Pandavas finished their sojourn in the forest, the people of that area dropped the idol in the sea. After a long time, a sage was travelling by boat in these parts. Suddenly his boat became immobile. The sea dried at that spot and they were able to recover this idol. The divine person took the idol with him. The boat travelled to the east through Kunnam and Pallikkara and reached the present spot of the temple. The divine person consecrated the idol in a temple there.
Festivals
The festival is during the first ten days of the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May). Lord Krishna’s birthday (Janmashtami) is celebrated in this temple.
Prasad and Offering
The idol of the main deity faces west along with his four hands. The temple opens around 2 AM. Around 3, a special offering called Usha Payasam is offered. This is cooked using rice, jaggery, ghee, banana and dried coconut. Milk Payasam, Ghee Payasam, Appam etc are offered to the Lord usually. There is a special offering called Chathurchatadam also.
