Legend and Stories
God Shiva and God Vishnu once were playing chess and Goddess Parvathi was the referee for that match. While the match was going on, God Shiva asked Goddess Parvathi’s opinion about rolling the play stick. Whatever opinion she gave was in the favor of God Vishnu. This act made God Shiva very angry and he cursed Goddess Parvathi to be born as a cow on the planet earth. Goddess Parvathi accepted it and came to this place as a penance.
One another story that is related to this temple is that once there was a vidyadhara named Chandan. He was born as a nightingale as he was cursed by God Indra. He came to this place and did his penance and regained his original form. Because of that God here is known as Kokileswarar where Kokil means nightingale.
