Kailasapuram is a small Village/hamlet in Jayamkondam Taluk in Ariyalur District of Tamil Nadu State, India. It comes under Kattakaram south Panchayath. It is located 38 KM towards East from District headquarters Ariyalur. 265 KM from State capital Chennai

About The Temple

Kailasapuram Kailasanathar temple is a Lord Shiva temple located in Tamil Nadu. People desirous of a child take a dip in the Sarpa river behind the temple and walk around 5 times in the car street. They also stay in the temple for a day. Offering pujas and abishek to Lord Kailasanathar and Mother Prasanna Nayaki is a part of the rituals carried out by the people to have a child. The women facing risk to their Mangal Sutras too pray here with their parents. Persons mentally feeble or retarded are recommended to sit on the Padma peetha in the mandap. Its roof has a zodiac chakra. They must chant Om Namasivaya mantra 108 times while sitting. Masa Sangrama Puja is organised on the first day of each Tamil month. For the duration of this puja ,i.e. between 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., several people would join and donate to the puja, draw a rangoli in front of the flag post called dwaja sthamba, lit lamp with ghee and as well as pray to Lord and Mother for reprieve from numerous difficulties met by them.The group comprises of spinster girls, married women besides individuals having adverse traits in their horoscopes such as Puthra dosha, Mangalya dosha,Sarpa dosha ,etc.The folk contains both gender.The tradition of going round the hill called Girivalam is followed in the temple.

About The Deity

The presiding deity is Kasinathar. All deities have separate shrines at the temple along with Mahamandapam, Artha Mandapam and towers.

Legend/Story

In the course of the Puranic age, Kailasapuram was densely populated by Vilwa trees on a mount. Perunjeevi and Chiranjeevi, two brothers came here to worship Lord Shiva. The elder brother Perunjeevi asked Chiranjeevi, the younger one to bring a Shivalinga for the reparation from Kasi. Since the younger brother was unable to reach Nedungudi along with a Linga from Kasi on time, Perunjeevi himself prepared a Linga and started the worship. As soon as Chiranjeevi returned with the Shivalinga, he requested his brother to do puja for this Linga also but Perunjeevi denied doing so. So, the younger brother initiated intense penance for the endorsement of his Linga. Lord Shiva appeared before them and called Perunjeevi’s Linga as Kailasanathar while Chiranjeevi’s as Kasinathar and stated that persons worshipping both Lingas would gain the advantage of praying at Kasi and Kailash. The temple was renovated by Pandya kings in the 13th century.
