Overview
The Jagadhamba temple in Rashin comes in the Taluka of Karjat in the district of Ahmednagar. This is an ancient temple well known for the Yamai and Tukai Devis, the Avatar Swarup of Goddess Renuka. Rashin Devi is the Kuldevta (family deity) of many people in Maharashtra. At present no known and detailed scripts or books are available giving more information of the place except for the locally published book in Marathi known as the "Sri Jagadhamba Mata Rashin Charithra".
Legend and Stories
As per Skanda Puran, there lived a demon named "Rakta Beej". Rakta Beej had a special boon from Lord Shankar (Lord Shiva). He was misusing his powers by causing harm. Hence as a solution all the Devas started praying to Jagadhamba. Hearing their prayers Goddess Jagadhamba was very pleased. She descended as Devi Yamai, and began the battle with Rakta Beej. The Devas prayed Goddess Renuka to come and assist Devi Yamai as Goddess Tukai. They killed the demon and liberated Rashin. This is the importance of the Rashin. Goddesses Yamai and Tukai both reside here to protect and liberate their devotees from all their sins.
Poojas
The entire temple is cleaned and washed every month. Nitya Pooja of the Devi is done two times in the day. The temple Mahadvars (doors) open at 4 AM. The priest performs the morning pooja, and wakes up the Devi from her sleep. He bathes the Devi with yogurt, milk, and honey. He then decorates the deity with a beautiful mahavastra (cloth). He beautifies her forehead with chandan (sandalwood paste). He offers her haldi (turmeric) and kumkum (saffron). Every day he garlands her with flower garlands.
Aarti
During kakad aarti in the morning and the aarti during the night before the deity sleeps, the pujari offers her a naivaidya (offering) of Pedas (sweets).
