Maa Ghanteshwari Temple is situated 33 kilometres (21 mi) southwest of the district capital Sambalpur on the bank of Mahanadi River. The Chipilima Hydro Powerplant (CHEP) is located near the temple on the same river bank.


About The Temple


Ghanteswari Temple It is one of the oldest temples in Orissa, India. The architect represents the old Indian way of construction of the temple. It has dome that invites the cosmic power to bestow upon the pilgrimages. The stone was used for construction and durability of it. Ghanteswari Temple is of a Hindu goddess. It is also known as the Bells Galore. Maa Ghanteswari temple is situated at the bank of Mahanadi River. It is located in the city Sambalpur in Orissa, India. People offer the deity ‘Bells’ whenever their wishes get fulfilled. It is very unique way to offer something to the divine power. The very name suggests the Bells and had been taken from them. The bells create divine melody and in a way it provides peace of mind. So, many tourists come here to feel peace and relaxation.


Legend and Stories


Maa Ghanteswari Temple was built by the early sailors in the ancient times. They had built the temple near by the Mahanadi River because they used to ring the bells as the sign of alarm or the warning against the storm and heavy winds. Therefore, it is also called as “the lighthouse without light”.
