Overview
Baneswar is a temple of Shiva located in the village of Nasarapur about 36 km southwest of Poona. It is a pleasant and calm temple amidst the jungle. It was discovered only recently. Hence it was declared as a small bird sanctuary. It has a decent amount of rare birds with many crowned hornbills seen.
Legend and Stories
Baneswar temple architecture is from the medieval period. The temple was built in 1749 by Peshwa Nanasaheb, son of Peshwa Bajirao I. The temple has an important bell which was taken by Chimaji Appa after defeating the Portuguese in the battle of Bassien, 1739. The bell has the year 1683 inscribed and a Cross on it, which indicate that the bell belonged to a church.
