Overview
The Annapurna Bhavani temple is located near the Kashi Vishwanath temple. It was built in the 18th century by Peshwa Baji Rao I. The temple is devoted to the supreme Shakti, widely known as Annapurna, is the combination of two words Anna and Poorna which means food and prosperity. The Goddess of Food, Annapurna Bhavani, the Kashi's queen and the divine consort of Lord Shiva, is considered to be the 'Mother of the Three Worlds'.
About the temple
The Annapoorna temple is a small sanctum with a large pillared porch. The image of the goddess located within the sanctum was established and blessed in January 1977 in a series of pratishtha rites conducted by the Shankaracharya of Shringeri. The idol is in the form of Shakti, carrying a cooking pot rather than the fearsome weapons borne by her fearful forms such as Kali and Durga. In the month of October - November, a food festival is organized here.
The temple complex consists of another subsidiary temple housing a solid gold image of Annapurna. This temple will opens only three days a year. Nearby this shrine, there is a glorious silver statue of Lord Shani or Saturn and a Ram Mandir.
