Overview
Ambernath Shiva temple is located at Ambernath. Ambernath more often spelt as Ambarnath is a city in Indian state of Maharashtra. Ambernath comes under the Thane district of Maharashtra.
About The Temple
Ambernath temple is known locally as the Purathana Shivalaya. The Shiva Temple of Ambernath is also called the Ambreshwar Temple. The temple is located on the banks of the River Vadavan. The temple dates back to 1060, and was built by king Mahamandaleshwar. Sikh guru, Guru Nanak visited the temple sometime in 1415.
The construction of Ambernath Shivalaya was done in black stone and lime. This category is a subset of the Vesara style, a combination of the Nagara and Dravidian architecture. The Ambernath temple is often compared to the famous Dilwara temples of Mount Abu, for their same quality of architecture and ornamentation.
The temple is ornamented inside and out, along with excellent sculptural works. The temple is corrugated, or fluted along its edges. Carvings of Shaivite theme form a chain around the temple exterior. Some have been lost due to the time and the elements, due to the soft nature of the stone.
The partial roof is supported by pillars, also sculpted. Even the ceiling has carved details. To reach the sanctum, one has to climb down from the hall. The Lingam located in the sanctum is open to the sky.
About The Deity
Ambernath means 'the king of the sky'. Lord Shiva is the main deity, appearing both in the form of Lingam in the sanctum and in the Harihara idol form. There is no roof so the deity is exposed to the sky.
Interesting Facts
Ambernath is home to an ancient Shiva temple that features two representations of Lord Brahma: one, an outstanding sculpture of Brahma carved on the outer wall, and the other, a rare idol of Hari-Hara-Pitamaha-Surya in which Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and Surya are together as a single deity.

On Mahashivarathri there is a big fair in Ambernath which continues for 3–4 days. The shrine becomes overcrowded in the month of Shraavana to get blessings from Lord Shiva.
