Overview
The Kalahasteeswara (Kalahasteeswarar) Temple is situated at the Coral Merchant Street, in the Parry’s Corner locality of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The temple lies about 3 km from the Broadway bus terminus.
About The Deity
The Kalahasteeswara Temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva who graces here as Lord Kalahasteeswarar, while the Goddess Shakti appears as Devi Jnanabirasanambigai.
Legend and Stories
Sri Kalahasteeswarar Temple at Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh is one of the renowned Pancha Bootha Sthalam, symbolizing the element Air (Vayu). Legends say that once there were three beings named Sri (a spider), Kala (a serpent) and Hasti (an elephant) who were truly devoted to Lord Shiva. All three happened to worship the Shiva Linga here daily. Sri, the spider weaved a web on top of the Shiva Linga in order to protect it from dust. The elephant would fetch water in its trunk and pour it over the Linga to bathe it while the snake adorned the Linga with its gem. However, one day the elephant that was unaware of the services of Sri and Kala, cleaned the Lingam with water, thereby removing the web and the gem. This resulted in a clash between the three which lead to their death. Lord Shiva then appeared and granted Moksha to all the three beings for the puree devotion that they showed towards him. Srikalahasti is also the holy place where Sri Kanappa Nayanar offered his eyes to the Lord.
