Vaigalnathar Temple

Overview


The Vaikalnathar Temple is located at Tiruvaigal and it is dedicated to God Shiva. The main deity of this temple is God Vaigalnathar and the Goddess is Kombial Kothai.


About the Temple


This temple is revered in the famous Thevaram hymns of the saints Appar, Sambandar, Sundrar and Manickavasagar. According to the hymns, it is the 33rd Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Holy River Cauvery. This temple is built by Kochengannan and is one of the Mada temples. God Shiva according to the Hindu mythology had three eyes and this place because of that has three God Shiva temples too. The right eye of the God is considered to be the Viswanatha-Visalakhi Temple, the left eye is considered to be the God Brahmmapureeswarr and Goddess Periyanayaki temple and the forehead eye is considered to be with God Vaikalnathar and Goddess Kombial Kothai. God Brahmma, God Vishnu, famous sage Agasthya and Goddess Mahalakshmi are known to have worshipped in this temple.


About the Deity


The chief deity of this temple is God Vaikalnathar and his consort is known as Kombial Kothai. There is a holy tree in this temple which is known as Shenbagam.


Legend and Stories


Goddess Earth Bhoomidevi once prayed to God Vishnu to marry her. God Vishnu obliged to her request and married her. Goddess Mahalakshmi did not like it and decided to leave the God. To take a severe penance to get back God Vishnu, she came to this place. God Vishnu and Bhoomidevi then came in search of Goddess Lakshmi. God Brahma also followed. They all found her here and prayed to God Shiva to set things right. Because of God Shiva, God Vishnu had both Lakshmi and Bhoodevi as his consorts. God Shiva is in the form of swayambumurthy in this temple.

The major festivals that take place in this temple include Maha Shivarathri, Purattasi Navarathri, Aipasi Annabishekam and all important festivals that are related to God Shiva.
