Tirupayathangudi Tirupayatrunathar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Tirupayathangudi in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, India.The historical name of the place is Tirupayattrur.The temple is dedicated to Shiva, as the moolavar presiding deity, in his manifestation as Tirupayatrunathar. His consort, Parvati, is known as Kavianganni.It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirunavukkarasar. The temple is lauded by Saint Appar in his Thevaram songs. This is the 78th Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery adulated in Thevaram songs.Four worship services are offered each day here. The annual Bhrammotsavam falls in the month of Vaikasi.


About The Temple


Raja Raja Chola II built this temple and there are a few inscriptions in this temple. Master Vinayaka of the temple is lauded as Siddhi Buddhi Vinayaka. The temple is confronting east. There are sanctums for Lords Siddhi Vinayaka, Dakshinamurthy, Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai, Viswanatha with Mother Visalakshi, Mothers Gajalashmi and Mahalakshmi, Sage Bhairava Maharshi, Bhairava, Sun, Moon, Somaskanda, Veera Makali and Chandikeswara.


Legend and Stories


This spot was at one time a focal point of fare and import exchange. Steeds were transported in from Arabia and pepper was traded in return. A merchant brought pepper sacks for fare.
