Overview


Raamappa Temple also known as the Ramalingeshwara temple is located seventy seven kilometres from Warangal, the ancient capital of the Kaakatiya dynasty, 157 km from Hyderabad in the state of Telangana in southern India. It lays in a valley at Palampet village of Venkatapur Mandal, in erstwhile Mulug Taluk of Warangal district. An inscription in the temple, dating it to the year 1213, informs the temple to have been built by a General Recherla Rudra, during the period of the Kaakatiya ruler Ganapathi Dev


About The Temple


The temple is a Shiva temple, where Lord Ramalingeshwara is worshiped. It stands majestically on a six feet high star shaped platform. The hall in front of the sanctum sanctorum has numerous carved pillars. The temple is known by the name of the sculptor Raamappa, who built it. History says that it took forty years to build this temple. The temple is a marvellous example of Kaakatiyan creative genius. The roof of the temple is built with bricks, which are so light that they can float on water.

There are two small Shiva shrines on either side of the main temple. Facing the shrine of Shiva, there is an enormous Nandi, and remains in good condition. Nataraj Ramakrishna revived Perini Shivatandavam (Perini Dance), by observing the sculptures in this temple. The temple remained intact even after repeated wars, plundering and destruction during war and natural disasters. There was a major earthquake during the 17th century which caused damage. Many of the small structures were neglected and are in ruins. The main gate in the outer wall of the temple is ruined.


Legends and Stories


The temple is built in an area of 5 acres and 20 acres of greenery is seen around the temple. The temple is named after the sculptor Raamappa. This is the only temple named after its sculptor. Twelve graceful female dancers in different poses welcome one to the temple. There are three gateways. The Mandapas of the temple are star shaped which reflect the architectural style of Kaakatiya dynasty.

The sand stone temple is crowned with a Vimana (tower) built of light bricks. The temple compound is surrounded by high walls adorned by beautiful structures which include 2 idols of Lord Shiva in the form of Kateshwara and Kameshwara. The Nandi statue stands is an added attraction. The interior of the temple is supported by the pillars with amazing carvings. The outer walls contain the striking poses of elephants and other animals. Images of Lord Ganesh, Lord Narasimma and other deities can be seen.
