Kalleshwara Temple

Overview


The deity of God Shiva is worshipped at the holy Kalleshwara Temple which is located at Hire Hadagali in Karnataka. The town of Hire Hadagalli is situated in the Hoovina Hadagali taluka of Bellary District.


About the Temple


As per the historians, this temple depicts the architectural style used in the Western Chalukyan era. In the Kannada inscription of 1057 CE, this temple is honoured as Bhimesvara-Demesvara. The other historical information of 1108 CE this temple was consecrated by Udayadiya as per the orders of Demarasa. An inscription dating 1212 CE points out that this temple was constructed by the ruler of Hoysala Dynasty named Veera Ballala.


Legend and Stories


This holy temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is believed to be of grave importance. It is said that this temple was either built during the reign of King Vikramaditya VI of Chalukya Dynasty or consecrated by Udayadita as per the orders provided by Demarasa.

The temple comprises of two shrines with their respective sanctums as well as vestibules that connect to a four pillared hall. Outside the temple complex, there is an open hall and sculpture of God Nandi is installed in a shrine constructed there. The decorations of the temple are similar to the Chalukyan art which depict various stories. On the niches, the deities of God Indra, God Shiva, Goddess Parvathi and Goddess Lakshmi are enshrined. The deities of God Brahma, God Keshava and God Shiva are enshrined on the eaves built above the door of the temple.
