Bheethargaon Temple

Overview

Bheethargaon temple is one of the oldest temples in the outskirts of Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh state. Basically this temple is an example of brick art of ancient era and not seems to be dedicated to any of the Hindu Gods. Nevertheless, some of the idols show that Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and some more gods were worshipped in this temple. This temple is located at 16 kilometres from Kanpur city and connected through national highway. Though, this village and nearby places have some more historical ruins but Bheethargaon temple has some special importance due to its constructional style.

About the Temple

Architecture of this temple is amazing. Presently, the hood type looking shrine is a bricked temple. The temple has thick walls constructed with an Ardha Mandap (hall) over it. Terracotta has special inclusion in the construction. This material was used in construction of side walls except entrance gate. Some time ago Ardha Mandap existed but has been damaged and now has fallen. Upper floor of the temple is now not accessible as the same is badly damaged. Double layered terrace with pillars supporting the wall show the architectural brilliance of the period when it was built.

This temple is considered to be built in the period of Gupta rule. This is presently the oldest temple still remaining with the tower and a roof. The upper portion of the temple fell during 18th century AD.
