Attukal Devi Temple

The temple is known for its resplendent architecture. The temple style resembles that of the both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. One can find the stories like Dasavathaaram (the ten incarnations of Vishnu) on its walls. Also the beautiful depictions of Mahishasura Mardhini, Kaali, Raja Rajeshwari, Hanuman and Parvati - Nataraja are etched out. The Gopuram beholds the story of Kannagi. The mythology of Dakshayaga has also been narrated in the Southside of the tower. The decorated entrance of the temple gives an enchanting look to the existing beauty of the shrine. In the sanctorum, there are two idols of the Goddess seen. They are decorated with ornaments and gems. The shrine has separate praharas for Ganesha and Nagaraja. History claims that Attukal Bhagavathy is the form of Kannagi. She is the famous protagonist of the Tamil epic, Silapathikaaram. It is said that after burning the ancient city of Madurai, she reached Kanyakumari and took rest at Attukal when she headed towards Kodungalloor. This temple was built in that holy spot, actually.
