Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashis. According to the Hindu calendar, it is observed every year during the month of Magha or Paush, i.e. in January. Some other names with which Shattila Ekadasi is famous among the people are: Shat-Tila Ekadashi, Stilla Ekadashi, Sattila Ekadashi, and Tilda Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu is worshiped on all the Ekadashis, but on Shattila Ekadashi, Lord Krishna is also worshiped.

The name Shattila or Shat-Tila has been derived from Til or sesame seeds. It is believed that donating Til (Sesame) seeds on this day will help in redeeming sins. It is also considered highly auspicious to take bath in water mixed with til (sesame seeds) and offer oblations to dead ancestors with water mixed with sesame seeds.
