Overview
The Kodanda Rama Temple is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Sri Rama. It is situated at the Chunchanakatte Village, near KR Nagara in the Mysore District of the state Karnataka, India.
About the Temple
The Kodandarama temple is located in the banks of River Cauvery. It is believed that Lord Rama stopped at this village during his Vanavasa and stayed at the house of a tribal couple named Chuncha and Chunchi. It is also said that when Devi Sita wanted to take a bath, Lord Shree Rama directed Lakshmana to find out a water source by firing an arrow at a rock nearby. The obedient Lakshmana did as ordered and therefore water sprinted from the rock, in three different shades, one as turmeric, the other as oil and the third one as a Shigakai shampoo form. The shades of these three colours can even now be found on the rock, when the water flowing in its full swing. The place where Lakshman fired his arrow came to be called as Dhanushkoti. The waterfall near the temple thus formed cascades from the height of about 20 meters and runs with full gush. The sound of the running water from the falls can be heard all over the place, except the many centuries old sanctum sanctorum. There is a unique reason given for that unusual phenomenon. When Lord Rama got tired of the many complaints kept before him by Devi Sita, he is said to have pronounced a curse saying that women must refrain from talking much. As a result, the sound of river Cauvery who is considered feminine, could not heard of within the sanatorium.
Legend and stories
According to Sthala Purana, the area of the present temple, in those days is said to be the Dandakaranya region, where river Cauvery was flowing in the name of Guptagamini . Sage Trunabindu happened to visit this place and underwent penance here.
This sacred shrine was renovated in the year 1924 by the Maharaja of Mysore, Shree Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadayar. The utsava murthies of this temple are preserved at the Lakshminarayana Temple in KR Nagara. The Utsava moorthis are brought in procession to this temple twice in a year, once during Rathotsava and again in the month of Karthika for Chikka Rathotsava.
