Sri Abathsahayanathar Temple

Overview


The Sri Abathsahayanathar Temple is located at Tiruvidaimarudur and is dedicated to God Shiva. This temple is one of the two Kurngaaduturais where Sugreeva and Vaali are known to have worshipped the great God Shiva.


About the Temple


This temple is a very ancient one. It is understood that this temple was rebuilt by Sembiyan Mahadevi who was the Chola queen in the 10th century. The inscriptions which existed from the old structure were re-engraved in the renovated one. This temple boasts of two prakarams and one big Rajagopuram. There are a lot of images of deities like Vinayakar, Natarajar, Agastyar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhavar, God Brahmma, Bhikshanathar, Alingamurthy and Goddess Durga. The sun rays directly fall on the sanctum for three days in a year.


About the Deity


The chief deity of this Temple is Thiru Apathasaheswarar and His consort is Sri Pavalakodi Ammadi.


Legend and Stories


According to Hindu mythology, God Shiva saved Sugriva from his brother Vaali as Sugriva was incapable to fight with Vaali. Sugriva then prayed to God Shiva who obliged to his prayers and converted him into a Swan and then kept him above a Vilva tree. Because of this Vaali was not able to find him. God Rama when searching for Sita is known to have come here with Hanuman. Sugriva prayed at this temple which increases its relevance. It is also understood that God Shiva had shown a glimpse of his cosmic dance to Sugreeva. Vaali is also known to have been killed by God Rama at this place.
