Venugopalaswamy Temple

Overview

The Devanahalli fort is a historically significant place which housed few prominent rulers of Mysore like the Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The fort surrounding the township has a number of temples within its boundaries such as the Nanjundeswara temple, Chamundeswara temple, Veerabhadraswamy temple and the Ranganathaswamy temple. Despite the fact that these temples were built during various eras, they follow the Hoysala style of architecture predominantly.

About The Temple

The Venugopalaswamy temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is relatively small in size but does not fail to attract the visitors with its amazing architecture. The temple’s pillars and fresco are beautifully carved with intricate designs pertaining to the Hoysala period. The temple greatly resembles the large complexes of temples at Belur and Halebid. Similarities in the carvings and statues can also be observed among these temples.

The temple’s Rajagopuram (Main tower) is tall with the two statues of Lord Vishnu on both sides, which are believed to be from the Ganga era. The statues are found carrying different tools and weapons and with different expressions that are completely contrasting. Despite its small size, the temple boasts of a spacious inner Prakara (precint). The prakara also has the Navagrahas, mukhamantapa and a small garbhagriha (Sanctum sanctorum). The Mukhamantapa’s pillars contains intricate carvings. The outer walls of the temple are built with stone and are covered in frieze, depicting various scenes from the epic Ramayana. The northern and southern walls narrate the entire Balakandam of Ramayana.

About The deity

The presiding deity Lord Venugopalaswamy appears in a standing position, as against his usual reclining posture. The deity is dressed in accordance to the Vijayanagara customs, while the shikara is in Dravidian style. This stands as proof for the beautiful blend of the two prominent cultures pertaining to this region.

Festivals

The annual temple festival or the Utsav is celebrated on the Chaitra Poornima day. The entire temple is completely cleaned and washed before the commencement of this festival, which has led to some damage to the frescos. These cleaning works are undertaken from the fund collected through donations and offerings by the devotees.
