Overview

Thiru Venkada Natha Puram Temple also known as Sri Venkatachalapathi Temple is Located at Mela Thiruvengadanatha Puram, Tirunelveli District in the state of Tamil Nadu. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

About The Temple

When Perumal took on a war to protect Mother Earth, He left His conch and discus with Garuda to protect the world which Garuda did till the return of the Lord. Hence, Garuda in this temple graces with conch and discus. The structure of the temple being similar to Tirupathi, the place is revered as Then Tirupati. As the Lord in the North is on the seven hills with lower Tirupati and Kalahasthi, there is a Then Kalahasti named Sangani Kailanathar temple. Here too, the hill is of white stones. As Akasha Ganga falls exists there, three is Tambirabarani falls here. Srinivasa Kattam has many sacred springs here as Pushkarani with other such springs in the north.

Venkatappa Naicker, ruling this region then went on a pilgrimage to various sacred places seeking a child boon and finally came to this place. When he had his dip in Srinivasa Gattam, he had a voice that he would be blessed with a child if he fed 1000 children quenching their hunger. He followed the directions of the voice and was blessed with a child. Immensely pleased with the male child he was blessed with, he built this temple, cured the land and made it fit for human habitation. He named the place Tiruvengadanatha Puram after his name.

12 sage poets who eulogized Perumal in their hymns and celebrated as Azhwars wished to be at the feet of the Lord in this temple on the northern bank of River Tambirabarani. The 12 steps leading to the sanctum sanctorum represent 12 Azhwars. Lord Srinivasa graces devotees with all assurance. Sri Anjaneya is on left front of the Lord as His Vahan. Those unable to take a trip to Tirupati in north, offer their prayer commitments here.

Legend and Stories

In days of yore, the place was but a jungle named Vaiprajyam. Pailar the chief disciple of Sage Veda Vyasa performed penance on the banks of Tambirabarani on Lord Srinivasa, installing him in his heart as there was no idol then with millions of flowers. On the seventh day, Lord appeared before Pailar in the form of Jyothi with His feet on the River. Enjoying the darshan of the Lord, in ecstasy, the sage begged the Lord to stay here itself in the form as in Tirupati. Responding to the prayer of the sage, Lord Srinivasa chose this place with His consorts Sridevi, Bhoodevi and Alarmelmanga Thayar. Sri Garudazhwar graces in the temple with conch and discus
