Valliyoorkkavu is an old sanctuary found high in the Hills at Valliyoorkkavu, 3 kilometers from Mananthavady town of Wayanad region in Kerala. Legend and Stories


As per the legends, once the prophecy of Kodungallur temple named Vadakkola Nambiar going through Wayanad and he rested close Kabani River. When he woke up, the sword and anklet of Devi were absent. He froze and glanced around, however couldn't discover it. At that point a Paniya tribal part demonstrated to them the sword and anklet holding tight the highest point of a valli (creeper) on a peepul tree on the highest point of the slope. As the prophet and his collaborators implored, the sword and anklet tumbled down and a perfect voice was heard that 'I am available here in three structures - as Vana-Durga, Jala Durga and Bhadrakaali.' So the Kottayam Raja, who was exploring the great outdoors at Mananthavadi, was educated and the sanctuary was assembled.


Festivals


Consistently there is a fifteen day celebration festivity in the months of February, March and April. The name of the popular celebration is Valliyoorkavu Festival. This celebration committed to Goddess Durga is a standout amongst the most sacred celebrations in the state. Many tribal individuals praise this celebration excellently in Kerala. The two week celebration is gone to by a huge number of enthusiasts.

The Kuttiady mountain road connects Vatakara with Kalpetta and Mananthavady. The Palchuram mountain road connects Kannur and Iritty with Mananthavady. The road from Nilambur to Ooty is also connected to Wayanad through the village of Meppadi.
