Legend and Stories

Thoovai Nathar Temple

Holy person Sundarar of Saivite Trinity guaranteed his first wife Sangili Nachiar that he would never part with her. Be that as it may, when considerations of his first wife Paravai Nachiar struck a chord, he set out to Tiruvarur. As he damaged his guarantee to Sangiliar, he lost his eyes. To pick up visual perception, he started a journey to all Shiva sanctuaries. At Kancheepuram, with the finesse of Mother Kamakshi and Lord Ekambareswara, Sundarar recaptured vision of his left eye. He came to Tiruvarur and asked the Lord to beauty him the vision of the other eye. He was prompted by the Lord to have a dunk in the tank at the southeast corner and beg Him then. Sundarar obeyed Lord and picked up sight of his right eye. It is said that all icons of the temple were made by the awesome stone worker Vishwakarma. The tank's area at the southeast corner is of extraordinary significance as indicated by Vastu rules. Planet Sani Baghwan is confronting south and graces the aficionados. The occasion of Sundarar getting vision of his right eye is prove by the eye image unmistakable on the Lord amid abishek times. This was previously a sand temple under the ocean, as per the historical backdrop of the area. At the point when tides of ocean burst devastatingly tall undermining obliteration of the world, Devas and Sages surrendered at the feet of Lord Shiva for insurance. Master told Sage Durvasa that if a tank could be burrowed at the Agni corner-southeast corner of the area and supplications to God offered to Him, the tides would die down and lives would be spared. Headed by Sage Durvasa, all did the guidelines of Lord and performed pujas. Reacting to the supplications to God of the enthusiasts, Lord Shiva ingested the ocean's wrath and spared the world. As Lord was loved by Sage Durvasa, He is otherwise called Durvas Nayanar.
