Thirukalleswara Temple

The Thirukalleswara Temple is located in the Singaraperumal Koil and is dedicated to God Shiva. The Gods and asuras, to attain nectar, churned the Ocean of Milk. The Manthara Mountain was used as the churner and Vasuki, the snake king, as the rope, by the Gods. But due to its heavy weight, the mountain started sinking into the sea. Thirumal took the form of a tortoise and shouldered the mountain from beneath the sea so as to prevent the mountain from sinking. According to history, Thirumal came to this sthala to worship God Shiva, to get the strength to bear the weight of the mountain while being in the form of a tortoise (kachapam) and thus the place was named Thirukachoor. It is also known as Aadhikachabesam.
