Legends and Stories

History

The temple of Suddh Mahadeva was built by Chaudhuri Ramdas of Chanhani and his son Chaudhuri Parag Mahajan. Sri Masu Shahane of Suddh Mahadeva is said to have constructed the entrance door. Suddh Mahadeva has a spring by the name "Papnashni Bowli". It is believed that taking a dip in it relieves a devotee of all his sins. The Devak stream originating at this place disappears a few kilometres downstream. The ‘Dhuni’ (sacred fire) immortalises Baba Roop Nath who attained Samadhi here. Devotees are of the faith that the fire is burning since times immemorial, ever since Baba Roop Nath resided here.

Legend

According to legend, Lord Shiva was engrossed in deep meditation, when he suddenly heard a shriek of Parvathi, his consort. He instantaneously charged his trident in Parvathi’s direction to protect her from any misfortune. However, it was Suddheet, Shiva’s disciple who had approached Parvathi to pay his obeisance. Since he was a demon in his previous birth, his fiendish looks had frightened her. The trident killed Suddheet. Shiva realized his mistake and offered to revive him, but Suddheet preferred to die in the hands of Lord Shiva himself. Moved by his devotion, Shiva prefixed his name to the place. The broken trident can still be seen installed in the temple. Since then it is called ‘Suddh Mahadeva Temple’
