Overview
The Virupaksheswarar temple is situate at Bazaar Road, in Mylapore locality of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. One has to take a bus from the Mylapore Tank bus stop to the Kutchery Road, and from there to Bazaar Road.
About The Temple
This temple is regarded as the oldest temple in Mylapore. Great Sage Kutsa himself is said to have worshipped the Lord here. This ancient shrine is located at close proximity to the popular Karaneeswara temple and Mundakkanni Amman temple in the same locality. Sivanesan Chettiar is credited to have built this temple. The chettiar had a daughter named Poompavai who unfortunately died at a young age. One of the most revered Nayanmars, Thirugnana Sambandhar is believed to have miraculously brought her back alive from her burnt bones. The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Virupakesheeswarar (Lord Shiva) and Vishalaxi Amman (Devi shakthi). The name Virupakesheeswarar means the 'one with three eyes'. ‘Viroopam’ literally means ‘Contradicting the Nature’. Since Lord Shiva possess the divine third eye, which is an unusual feature, he is fondly called Virupaksheeswarar. The present temple is very small yet calm. There is also a tank within the temple premise. The water from this tank is considered holy and is believed to cure people of Theo illnesses.
