Sri Vinayagar Temple

Overview : Sri Vinayagar temple of God Ganesha is located in Keralapuram village of Nagarcoil district in Tamilnadu, India. The temple is around 500 to 1000 years old. There is a historical story about this temple. The King of Keralapuram had been to Rameswarm. He found the idol of God Ganesha on the beach and handed it over to the king of Rameswaram. He instead returned it with another huge emerald idol. During the Mughal invasion the emerald one was taken away. According to the local priest the idol must be around 2300 years old while the temple is constructed around it in 12th century. The temple has many interesting things to note.It is called miracle Ganesha temple because the Ganesha idol changes colour every six months. During Uttarayana ( from March to June) the idol is black in colour while during Dashinayana (from July to February ) it turns white. The colour of the water in the well which is in the temple premises too changes, from black ( when the idol is white ) to white ( when the idol is black). The idol of God Ganesha is under the banyan tree instead of inner chamber of the temple. Devotees wishing to get married or wishing to have children offer coconut and rice dumplings. The temple is typically in Kerala style with no gopurams and huge pillars.
