Sri Valvil Ramar Perumal Temple

Overview


This temple is one of the 108 Vishnu temples, located near Kumbakonam. This temple can be reached by car comfortably along with the Adhanoor Divyadesam.Thiruppullam Boothankudi is about 6 Km. away from Swami Malai Sri Swamintha Swamy Temple in a village road which leads to Thiruvaigavoor.


About the Temple


Bhomi Pirattiyar represents one of the five Panchabhootas, Earth, gives dharshan along with Sri Ramar as Narayanan in Nindra Thirukkolam here. Hence the name called as “Pullam Boothan Kudi at this temple. The temple has a small shrine with Vimanam and 3-tier rajagopuram. The temple tank is located north of the temple. Sri Ramar born and brought up as an ordinary human being met Lord Parasuramar (Previous avathaar). After performing the rituals for “Jatayu”, who tried to save Goddess Sita, Sri Ramar took rest. This temple reflects the position of Moolavar as though taking rest. As Goddess Sita Devi was not present, Sri Ramar did all the rituals along with Bhoomi Devi. So Bhoomi Piratti is in a sitting posture along with Moolavar Sri Valvil Ramar. Also there is a separate temple for Bhoomi Devi Natchiar in this temple. The name of Thayar is “Potramarayal”. Kiruthrajan was doing meditation (tapas) here at Thirupulla Bhothangudi keeping Lord Vishnu in his heart and mind. Lord Vishnu was very much impressed upon his tapas and gave Dharshan as Valvil Raman in Bujangha Sayanam. Since, the Theertham which purified Kiruthrarajan, the theertham here is called “Kiruthra theertham”.


About the Deity


The Moolavar is Sri Valvil Raman, in the Kidantha kolam in Bujanga Sayanam facing the East. Prathyaksham for Chakravarthy Thirumangan Ramar and Raja Kruthra. Utsava Moorthy gives seva Valvil Raman has four hands (Chathur Bhujan) along with Sangu and Chakram. Thayaar is Potramaraiyaal (Hemambujavalli). She has her own separate sannadhi.


Legend and Stories


Legend goes that Ravana abducted Seetha and carried her, the King of the eagles Jataayu fought with him. Ravana smashed him with his sword and Jataayu lay half-dead moaning ‘Rama, Rama’. Hearing this feeble moaning, Rama and Lakshmana who were crossing that area went near and saw the dying bird. Jataayu breathed his last after informing them about Ravana’s abduction of Seetha. The sorrow-stricken Rama wanted to perform the funeral rites to Jataayu. The rule is, when such rites are performed, the wife should be present. Since Seetha was not there, Rama wholeheartedly thought of her. At once, Bhooma Devi, Seetha’s image appeared to help Rama.Rama with Her help conducted the funeral rites for Jataayu. Reminiscent of this incident, this temple was erected.

Sri Rama Navami and Vaikunda Ekadasi are festivals mainly celebrated here.


Significance


This holy place is dedicated to the Buda (Mercury) planet and so prayers to absolve evils, especially for the departed souls are considered good in this place. Those who meet with hurdles for their wedding also pray here. The traditional belief is that those who desire promotion in their jobs, if they perform thirumanjanam and worship the Yoga Nrsimhar and Udyoga Nrsimhar in the prakaaram are sure to get their prayers fulfilled.
