About the Temple

Sri Thenupureeswarar Temple

Goddess Durga in this temple was known to be the custodian and the advisor deity of the Chola Kings. She remained so for over a century for kings including the renowned Raja Raja Chola. She used to be in the north side of the palace in Patteeswaram. Also, God Bhairava, God Vinayaka and God Muruga used to be there in the palace shrine. The Chola kings always took a decision regarding the administration or governance after praying to Goddess Durga. As seen in most of the temples Goddess Durga is mostly furious but here the case is not the same. She is in an all smile, merciful avatar sitting on her Lion vehicle.

Once child Tirugnana Sambandar had come to Patteeswaram. It was a scorching summer day. God protected from the sun by sending a cool pearl tent through his Bhooda Ganas. He was completely touched and moved by the God’s grace. The saint then decided to worship God in a great manner.

This temple is designed in the architecture form of the Naicker period. One can see a lot of painting which depict the Marathi beauty.

Legend and Stories

Sri Thenupureeswarar Temple

According to legend, Goddess Parasakthi had chosen this place for Her penance on God Shiva. Many of the devas came to this place as trees and plants so that this place could be green and beautiful. The holy cow Kamadenu had asked her daughter Patti to help the Goddess in her penance and the prayer to God Shiva. God Shiva was very pleased with the devotion and penance that he came in front of the Goddess with bunch of hair.

Kamadenu’s daughter Patti very well knew the sacredness of this place and also after observing the Shiva Puja by Goddess Parsakthi, she created a shivalinga made of sand and also performed penance. For doing abhishekam she took Gnanvavi theertha’s water. God Shiva liked it and approved her shivlingam and submerged in it. Since Patti worshipped at this place, this place got the name of Patteeswaram.
