Sri Subramaniar temple

Overview

Sri Subramaniar Temple is located in Vilvarani at Tiruvannamalai district and is dedicated to God Muruga. This is one of the oldest Murugan shrines of Tamil Nadu. Generally, the Linga form represents Lord Shiva. To confirm and prove the theory that Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga are but one, the presiding deity, Lord Subramania also graces here in the form of Linga.

About The Temple

Fire is Lord Shiva. The warmth in the fire is Mother Umadevi. The shade of the fire is Lord Ganapathi and the light is Lord Muruga. Substantiating the hypothesis that every one of these qualities of flame are indistinguishable and that Lord Shiva is Lord Muruga and Lord Muruga is Lord Shiva, the Shivalinga shape is revered as Lord Muruga Himself in this temple. It is additionally trusted that all the 27 stars and Kruthika pengal visit the temple on all Krthika days to venerate Lord Muruga.

Legend and Stories

Few years ago, there was a priest who performed poojas in the nearby temples. He used a stallion to travel to places he wished. As always he used to go to Tiruthani Muruga Temple to venerate Lord Muruga on Kruthika star days consistently accompanied by another priest. On one such day, he couldn't go to Tiruthani on account of some obstruction. Both were to a great degree sad. Lord Muruga appeared in their dream when they were dozing amid the night and uncovered to them that He was in the Nakshatra Hill as a Naga (wind) and guided them to erect a shrine and direct pujas on Kruthika Star days. Both checked for the Swayambu image in the particular hill and found a Linga shielded by a snake. On seeing the priests, the Naga transformed into an umbrella like statue over the Lord's head. The two pastors raised a tent and began the veneration. In course of time, Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai image was made and presented. As the snake offered shade to Muruga as an umbrella, the symbol was so arranged comparably. Lord Muruga graces in the Shrine as a Swayambu Linga.

Festivals

All monthly Kruthika days and in particular the Aadi month Kruthika (July-August) are festival days in the temple. 10 day Panguni Uthiram (March-April) is very famous here when Lord Muruga comes down from the hills on the fifth day. The car festival takes place on the seventh day. A chariot is specially made for the festival at a cost of Rs. 16 lakhs.

Significance

Those facing adverse effects from the aspects of Rahu (Dragon’s tail) and Kethu (Dragon’s head) worship Lord Muruga here for relief.
