Legend and Stories

Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal Temple

During the ancient times, Mamallapuram sea region was believed to be of dense forests. When Sage Pundareeka was performing penance here, he saw a tank nearby filled with lotus flowers in full bloom and wished to offer them at the feet of Lord Narayana who is the celestial lord who resides in the Milk Ocean (Tiruparkadal). Picking up the flowers, Sage Pundareeka proceeded to Tiruparkadal but the sea refused to give way to the Lord’s abode. In order to make way, the Sage decided to empty the sea by drying it up completely and started to remove the water day and night. This process went on for years and in this back breaking effort, he got tired and cried in pain “Oh Lord Paranthama, if I am your true devotee, let the sea dry and make way for me and till such time I reach you, these flowers should not fade off.” The sage’s mind was completely set on the Lord. Looking at his arduous devotion, Lord Srinivasa appeared in front of him as an old man who needed help.

The old man requested the sage to get him some food as he was very hungry. He also advised the sage to stop his impossible task and do something useful. The sage asked the old man to hold his basket bearing the lotuses and wait till he returned with food for him. The sage expressed himself saying that he was determined to see Shri Srinivasa in Tiruparkadal and place these flowers at his holy feet and would not rest until then. The sage went to bring food for the old man and before he returned, Shri Srinivasa wore all the flowers on himself and was in his reclining posture. The sage was exhilarated to see his Lord on returning and begged his pardon for making him carry the basket of flowers and also begged to allow him at the Lord’s lotus feet.

Since the Lord gave darshan in his reclining position, Shri Srinivasa is praised as Sthala Sayana (Lord in his reclining position).
