Overview


Sri Mathangi Ammal Sametha Sri Mathangishwarar Temple is located in a remote part of the Thirunangur village. This is the main Rudra kshetra of the eleven Rudra kshetrams. The temple is very small. But Lord Mathangishwara is big in size.


About The Temple


Sri Mathangeeswarar Temple

The most special thing in this temple is the "Double Nandi". There are two Nandis on the outer corridor on the same platform. One Nandi faces Mathangishwarar, whereas the other faces Tiruvenkadu.

One more special feature is also there. That is the Kali (Wooden kali idol) in the temple. The entrance of the shrine, is very small than the size of idol. But, every year the idol is taken out for procession.


About The Deity


The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva known as Mathangishwarar and his consort is Mathangi.


Legend and Stories


Sage Mathanga did his penance in this place and got Uma (Mathangi) as his daughter. Lord Shiva from Tiruvenkadu (Swetharanyeswarar) came here and married Sri Mathangi and they both went to Tiruvenkadu (There she is known as Brahmavidhyambal).
