History

In 2004, two Shiva devotees visited Oondreeswarar temple in Poondy village. Suddenly, a village boy appeared in front of them and asked them to visit a Shiva lingam at Neyveli village. The devotees proceeded towards the Neyveli village and found nothing. After persistent search, they saw a mound of thorny shrubs and wild weeds. On cleaning this place, they found a beautiful Shiva lingam which was partially buried under the clutches of the giant roots of Kallala tree.

Legend

According to the legend, even today the two most eminent siddha purushas, Shree Karur Devar and Shree Sadasiva Brahmendrar worship in this temple at midnight. The Kallala tree which is standing tall in the temple complex is the abode of Vana Durga or Kali, the Goddess of forests. It is believed that nine sages are doing penance under this tree. In the ancient days, the tribes and Adivasis that lived in the forest, worshiped Goddess Kali as their main deity in this form. The supernal presence of Goddess Kali can be felt even today. A serpent couple living in this tree make occasional appearance during the pradhosha kaala puja. Shree Agneeswarar temple holds a spiritual importance for the Sarpa dhosha remedy.
