Sidhi Vinayaka Temple

Overview

Uppinakudru is a beautiful island village located 6Km from Kundapur in Udupi district, Karnataka. Uppinakudru is derived from the word ‘Uppu’ which means ‘Salt’. Since the place was involved in salt and sea food trade in the past, it came to be called ‘Uppinakudru’ which literally means 'Island of Salt'. The Sidhi Vinayaka temple in Uppinakudru , though relatively small in size, boasts of few temples and mutts. This temple is located next to the Vasudeva swamy Temple. According to legends, when Britishers started ruling India, tobacco was exported from this place. During that period, the statues of Hindu gods and goddesses were illegally sold in the foreign market, since they fetched lots of money. Once, an idol of Lord Ganapathi was similarly meant to be smuggled and was kept inside a tobacco bundle inorder to hide it. But somehow, the idol is said to have slipped from the tobacco bundle and got dropped at this place. Later, a temple was built for this idol of Lord Ganapathi at Uppinakudru. This is how Sri Siddhi Vinayak temple came into existence.
