Overview
Sri Shila Devi Temple is located at Devisinghpura Amer fort at the Jaipur district of Rajasthan, India. The temple is primarily dedicated to goddess Shakti.
About the Temple
During the later part of the sixteenth century, Maharaja Mansingh is believed to have brought the statue of the goddess Shila Mata from the eastern part of Bengal. Maharaja Mansingh was once defeated by King Kedar of Pratapaditya Kingdom. Saddened by the humiliating defeat, Maharaja Mansingh is said to have worshipped Goddess Kali, seeking her blessings to taste victory in war.
Apparently, goddess Kali had appeared in the dreams of the Maharaj one day to grant his wish. She had also obtained a promise from the Maharaja that he would establish her shrine in his capital. Hence, the Devi's idol was recovered from the sea in the form of a Shila (Slab). On bringing this Shila to Amer, it was cleaned and washed, when the present idol appeared. Thus the Devi here is fondly called the Shila Mata to the present day. Followers of Goddess Shakti visit this temple in large numbers seeking the blessings of the ultimate goddess Durga (Parvathi).
The temple's architecture is quite noteworthy. It has been built in adherence to various vastu sastra (architectural norms) and houses well crafted pillars and walls. Scenes from Puranas are depicted in the panels, with floral designs and other sculptures are carved in the temple walls.
