Shanmuganathar Temple

The Shanmuganathar Temple is located in Kunnakudi and is dedicated to God Shanmuganathar. The Togaiyadi Vinayakar shrine is at the foot of the hill, with a flight of stairs leading to the top of the hill. A shrine to Idumban sits on the way to the hill temple and so does the Kunnakkudi temple, built by the Marudu brothers (Sivaganga Samastaanam). Legend has it that Vishnu and Bhrama once visited Skanda. The peacock mount of Skanda was arrogant to the guests and Skanda turned the peacock into stone. This peacock appeared like a hill and did penance after which it was restored to life. Part of the rock remained as Mayuragiri or Kunnakkudi, enshrining Skanda or Murugan. The name Kunnakudi comes from the sacred Kunru(hill) housing the temple, and is also known as Mayuragiri, Arasavanam and Mayuranagaram.
